MEAL PROGRAM

The Institute fee includes the University of Michigan meal plan from the first Monday through the last Friday.  The meal program includes a lunch and dinner every day except Sunday when only a mid-day brunch is served.  These meals are all-you-can-eat buffet style.  There are many nearby grocery stores and take-out restaurants where students can purchase inexpensive meals at any time, including breakfast.

HOUSING

Students will generally be housed in double or triple occupancy dorm rooms.  Students must bring their own linens and toiletries such as soap, laundry detergent, pillow cases, sheets, towels, etc.  Students are responsible for the condition of their rooms.  Return of the security deposit ($35.00) is contingent upon approval of the condition of their room and nearby common areas by the Residence Staff.

IDENTIFICATION

It is extremely important that each student coming to the Michigan Debate Institutes have official picture identification.  In the past students without proper identification have had great difficulty cashing travelers checks and personal checks from home.

Mail Sent to Students During the Institute

Do not mail to the general Institute address.  Students will receive mail only at this address:

Student's Name

Michigan Debate Institutes

West Quad Dormatories

541 Thompson Street

PHONE CALLS

Each room will have a phone which can receive calls.  Students may also use this phone to call other rooms and university numbers.  Students will not be able to place calls charged to their phones, but can place credit card or collect long distance calls.

SPENDING MONEY

The Institute Fee covers all tuition, room, the University meal plan, and lab fees.  Students may need a small amount of additional money for the following items:

1.  Security Deposit.  A security deposit of $35.00 is required upon arrival.  It will be refunded at the time of departure after the condition of the student's room and common areas are approved.  Please write a separate check for this deposit.

2.  Copying costs.  The Institute registration fee covers the entire cost of lab photocopying. The Institute does not cover the cost of in-library photocopying or incidental copying done by students.

3.  Laundry.  Wash loads cost $1 and dryer loads cost 50¢.

4.  Debate Supplies.  The Institute Office sells basic debate supplies at very low cost.  Supplies are also available all around campus.

5.  Entertainment/Off campus meals.  Students may want an occasional break from the dormitory meals and debate work.  A "night on the town" in Ann Arbor will usually cost around $20.00.  Late night pizza and other food deliveries are a common extra expense.

SHOULD I BRING....???

Recreational equipment such as softball gloves a basketball, frisby etc., can be useful.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Many of your questions can be answered on this page. Use the links below to jump to a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

General Information

What supplies should I bring?  Does the institute provide anything?

You should bring scissors, a few rolls of tape, blocking pens, blocking paper and flow paper.  Some students also bring a tub to carry home their evidence.  Some students also choose to bring a laptop.  You are NOT required to bring any supplies, we merely advise you to do so.  Supplies can be purchased in our institute office or at places near to campus for a reasonable price anytime during the camp.

Did I get in off the waitlist?  How will I know?

All people admitted will be notified via this web site.  If there is a wait list that will be designated on this web site.  Those who are admitted off the wait list will be notified by phone and email.

Can you tell me the names of other people from my area that are attending?

No. It's institute policy to keep everyone's information private.

What forms of ID do I need to attend?

Bring a driver's license or school ID if you have one. You will be provided a Michigan ID when you arrive.

Registration and Fees

Can the application fee be subtracted from the tuition or reimbursed?

 No.  The fee is non-refundable.

Can I pay part of the tuition at registration and the rest at the end of the camp?

No.  Tuition in full is due before registration.

Housing and Dormitory

What size sheets do I bring?  Do we need pillows? Towels?

All beds are singles. You must bring your own pillow. Bring your own towels.

 Are roommate requests guaranteed?

Yes, in most cases. Cross-institute requests are more difficult. Roomate requests must be made in advance by both parties.

Can you tell me who my roommate is?

No, for privacy reasons we cannot. This is an institute policy.

Can you tell me my phone number in advance to give to my family and friends?

No.  Unfortunately, we do not know these numbers until the camp begins.  Students will receive their phone numbers at registration.  We strongly and continuously advise them to call home the first night!

Can I request a single, double or triple?

No. Rooms are allocated on the basis of availability.

Can I make long distance calls from my room?

Yes. Long distance calls can be made with a calling card.

 How safe is the dorm?

The institute employs Resident Advisors to watch the dormitory floors every night. In addition to RA supervision, the institute office is staffed until 4 am every night by an adult from our staff. The University of Michigan assigns a safety officer to the dormitory for nighttime supervision.  We offer the best staff to student ratio in the entire industry.

Medical Issues

I have a special medical need, will someone help me?

Special medical needs, such as diabetes, are handled by our staff and University Health Services, if necessary. Please let us know in advance of your particular needs.

Students and Money At The Camp

How much spending money should you bring?

Usually the most significant variable is food. Students that choose not to eat in the dorm will need more money than those that eat regularly in the dorm. Bring enough money to purchase toiletries, order pizza, visit Pinball Petes and eat some ice cream. You might also need to factor supplies into your calculations.  All institute social events are free.

How much copy money do I bring?

 Usually about $100

Do you take credit cards on registration day?

No. Cash or check only.  Please make sure your check is signed and made payable to the Michigan Debate Institutes.

Do I get a discount if I leave a few days early?

No. We pay for meals and dormitory space based on full attendance so we cannot offer discounts unless arrangements are made substantially in advance.

Transportation and Airport

Will someone pick me up at the airport?

No. Transportation from the airport to the campus is your responsibility. A cab costs about $50.  You can make reservations with Ken's Airport Shuttle Service at (734) 941-7777 for a price of $46.00 one way or $92.00 round trip.  The only exception to this rule is if your child is too young to be allowed off the plane without an adult.  If your child needs this service you will have to make direct arrangements with us at our contact numbers or email address.  There are no other exceptions to this rule.

How far is the airport from the campus?

 About 30 minutes by car.

 Where do I go?

Tell your driver that you want to go to the West Quad Dormatory on the University of Michigan's central campus. The street address is 541 Thompson Street, Ann Arbor, MI  48109. When you arrive you will see signs and banners welcoming you to the institute.  If you want to see more information on the West Quad Dormatories, please follow this link- http://www.housing.umich.edu/residencehalls/index.php?hall=westquad&hallname=West%20Quadrangle
