Jarrod Atchison

Director of Debate at Trinity University, 7 Week Seniors

Jarrod Atchison, Ph.D. is the new Director of Debate at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. For the past six years Jarrod has coached successful teams at the University of Georgia and Wake Forest University. In five of the past six years, Jarrod has coached first round teams to the National Debate Tournament including the 2007 Copeland Award winner for the top ranked team going into the N.D.T. His debaters have won numerous speaker awards including the second speaker at the 2005 N.D.T. and the first and second speakers at the 2007 Northwestern Tournament. As a debater at Wake Forest University, Jarrod qualified for the N.D.T. all four years including two first round bids. His senior year at Wake Forest, Jarrod was third speaker at the N.D.T., top seed, and the runner up for the Copeland Award. As a high school debater for Caddo Magnet High School, Jarrod won the Greenhill, Harvard, and Baylor round robins. He qualified for the T.O.C. three times and was tenth speaker overall his senior year. Jarrod has previous workshop experience at Wake Forest University and is looking forward to joining the Michigan faculty. 

Ryan Burke

Assistant Debate Coach at Emory University, 7 Week Seniors

Winner of the 2006 National Debate Tournament.  As a debater at Michigan State University, Ryan received several First Round Bids to the National Debate Tournament, including the third bid in 2006. In his final year of debate, he reached the Semifinals or better at seven of the eight major invitational tournaments, including five final round appearances and three tournament wins. After a year of coaching at MSU, Ryan is now an Assistant Coach at Emory University.  This year, Ryan's teams have won the Dartmouth Round Robin and Georgia State and been in the Finals at the University of Texas and Semifinals at Harvard, Wake Forest, and Fullerton.  Ryan has previously worked at the Spartan Debate Institutes and is a past participant of the Michigan Debate Institutes.

Joe Carver

Director of Debate at Carrollton Sacred Heart, 7 Week Juniors

As a college coach, Joe coached the first community college team to ever qualify for the NDT. He led his Whitman College teams to elimination rounds at every national tournament. His teams appeared in the Octafinals of the NDT and quarterfinals of CEDA Nationals. Joe's Carrollton teams have reached the TOC in each of his 3 years as Director. His teams have been invited to The Greenhill Round Robin, The Harvard Round Robin, The Michigan Round Robin and The California Round Robin. They have appeared in eliminations at Greenhill, Georgetown Day, St Marks, Michigan, The Glenbrooks, MBA, Harvard and Berkeley.  As a debater, Joe was a CEDA All American and finished his Senior year ranked in the top ten teams nationally. He is a board member of the National Debate Coaches Association and a returning Seven Week faculty member to the Michigan Debate Institutes after a one year hiatus.

Josh Clarke

This year, Josh’s teams have won La Costa Canyon, reached the Finals at the University of Southern California and Alta, and Semifinals at Meadows.  Quarterfinalist at the 2004 National Debate Tournament.  Former Assistant Coach at Damien High School.  Has previously worked at the Spartan Debate Institutes.  A returning faculty member to the Michigan Debate Institutes.

Eric Forslund

Assistant Director of Debate at Damien High School, Classic for Sophomores

In two years at the University of Wyoming, Eric has coached his teams to the elimination rounds at nearly every major college tournament including Harvard, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Texas, University of Southern California, California State University at Fullerton, Gonzaga, Georgia State University, and CEDA Nationals.  In 2005 he coached the CEDA Debater of the Year, and his debaters won speaker awards at nearly every tournament they attended.  In two years at Damien, Eric's teams have appeared in the late elimination rounds at The Glenbrooks, Greenhill, Berkeley, Stanford, USC, Arizona State, Meadows, New Trier, and the Golden Desert. His teams have received invitations to the Greenhill and Northwestern Round Robins, and have secured multiple bids to the TOC.  He has previously worked at the Cal National Debate Institute and the Wyoming Forensics Institute.
