The Seminar:

The goals of the Seminar are to help high school debate coaches prepare to teach the new policy topic, encounter and consider major theoretical issues in debate, develop techniques for the teaching of debating skills to students, and the development of curricular and co-curricular materials for classroom and afterschool instruction and coaching.

To secure your reservation for the Seminar, we must receive your application, including payment of the Seminar Fee of $625, by June 1. The Seminar Fee includes residence in a dormitory room, daily lunch and dinner, Meal Plan, theory curriculum guide, and tuition. We do offer a "tuition only" option if you provide your own housing and food in the area that fee is $300.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Seminar is designed to be flexible so that coaches of all backgrounds, including pure beginners and long-time directors, can benefit. Ultimately much of the specific curriculum and class schedule is selected by the participating coaches themselves. The following represent the major elements:

  • Lectures by members of the Michigan Debate Institutes faculty.
These lectures offer a comprehensive introduction to the national policy topic including affirmative surveys and a defense of the status quo.
  • Daily attendance at class sessions for the seminar.
These Lab Meetings are directed by John Lawson the long time director of debate at Groves high school and an alum of UM and UM debate. Seminar participants observe these sessions which cover various topics including argument development, theory issues, research strategies, practice debates, and speaking skills.
  • Opportunities to watch the 7 week lab or MNDI labs at the camp.
Full access to the University of Michigan Library and Computing Systems.
The Michigan library and computing systems are among the finest in the world. Seminar participants also receive a hands-on instructional class in computer-assisted debate research.

I have attended the Michigan Coaches Seminar for five years. It has truly revolutionized my ability to coach and direct my debate program. It enables me to learn about the new resolution so that I can help my students in the fall. The coaches seminar is designed to help coaches of any experience levelIve seen veteran coaches and novice coaches benefit greatly at Michigan. The lectures and lab sessions expose me to the cutting edge of debate theory and strategies. The Michigan faculty is extremely generous with their time and is very helpful. I give this program my strongest recommendation.

Bill Barthelme, Director of Forensics, Bergenfield High School, New Jersey
