The 2008 University of Michigan High School Debate Tournament
Friday, November 7 - Sunday, November 9, 2008

A Quarter-Final bid to the Tournament of Champions

On behalf of The Michigan Debate Team, we are pleased to invite you to the 13th Annual University of Michigan Debate Tournament held on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 7-9, 2008. The tournament will provide competition in the Varsity and Novice divisions of Two-Person Debate.  The tournament is now certified as a TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS QUALIFIER IN THE QUARTERFINALS FOR POLICY DEBATE IN THE VARSITY DIVISION.

HOW TO REGISTER

Teams must register by Monday, November 3, space permitting. We will continue to accept teams up to that that date providing we have rooms. If we have filled up by the time you register we will have a waiting list available. All registration is being conducted via the Joy of Tournaments website, which should be up and running in the next few months.  Last year we reached capacity in all divisions and had to turn several entrants away, particularly those who registered informally, so please enter early to assure your teams a spot at the tournament. Final registration will be held from 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. at the Hampton Inn Schembechler Suite on Friday, November 7th.  Tournament fees are due no later than this time. You will receive your tournament packets at registration. We will accept credit card payments over the phone up until the day of registration. If you need a more easily printed version of this invitation please send a request to jbhoe@umich.edu and Josh will include an attached copy in his reply for easy printing.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

**This schedule is subject to change based on entries** The varsity divisions will consist of six preliminary debates: three rounds on Friday and three on Saturday plus the first elimination debate. We plan to break the top 32 teams with a record of 4 wins or better in the Two-Person division. If our numbers stay constant, we will be breaking to a full double octafinals round. All preliminary and elimination rounds will be held on the Central Campus. The novice divisions will also consist of six preliminary rounds with three on Friday and three prelims on Saturday in addition to the first elimination debate- judges permitting.  The Novice Two-Person division is currently scheduled to clear to octafinals. Each team or competitor entered has a 3 round prelim judging obligation. All Judges are obligated for the first elimination round. Judges are further obligated to judge one round after the elimination of their last team or competitor. Schools whose judges or replacement judges do not meet their obligations can have their teams prevented from competing.

TOURNAMENT FEES

Fees for the tournament are $90.00 per team.  A limited number of hired judges will be available at $110.00 per uncovered team or competitor. In other words a full judge would cost $220.00 and cover Two Teams or Competitors.

LODGING

The tournament hotel is the Hampton Inn Ann Arbor South.  If you make your reservation by October 17, 2008, the rate will be $84.00 per night for a quad.
