Tournament of Champions (TOC) Octafinals Bid Tournament
On behalf of the University of Michigan and Michigan Debate Program, we are pleased to invite you to attend the 17th Annual University of Michigan High School Debate Tournament. The tournament will be held on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd-4th, 2012. The tournament will provide competition in the Varsity and Novice divisions of two person (policy) debate. The tournament has been certified as an OCTAFINALS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS QUALIFIER FOR POLICY DEBATE IN THE VARSITY DIVISION.
HOW TO REGISTER
Teams must register by Monday, October 8th, space permitting. Tournament entry and judging fees are also due at this time. Fees should be mailed to 2205 Michigan Union, 530 South State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Checks should be made out to Michigan Debate. If for some reason you can't pay by check, we should be able to accept Visa, American Express, and Mastercard credit card payments via our webpage - http://www.michigandebate.com. No refunds will be issued after October 8th.
We will accept as many entries as we have available rooms. If we have filled up by the time you register, we will have a waiting list available. Last year we reached capacity in both divisions and had to turn several entrants away, particularly those who registered informally. Please enter early to assure your teams a spot at the tournament. All registration and entries should be done at www.tabroom.com. The exact URL for our tournament registration can be found at http://umdebatetournament.tabroom.com.
We will again use ordinal judging preferences and require judges to enter their ballots online. Final registration will be held in the Schembechler Suite from 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. at the Hampton Inn Ann Arbor South on Friday, November 2nd. You will receive tournament packets (including a campus map, the final schedule, restaurant suggestions, etc.) at registration.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The schedule is always subject to change based on entries. The varsity division will consist of seven preliminary debates: two preset rounds on Friday and five additional preliminary rounds on Saturday. Round 3 will be paired high-high and rounds 4-7 will be paired high-low. Round 4 will be lag-powered off rounds 1 and 2. Rounds 5-7 will be power-matched. The top 32 teams will clear to a Double Octafinals on Sunday morning. All preliminary and elimination rounds will be held on the Central Campus.
The novice division will also consist of seven preliminary rounds: two preset rounds on Friday and five additional preliminary rounds on Saturday. Round 3 will be paired high-high and rounds 4-7 will be paired high-low. Round 4 will be lag-powered off rounds 1 and 2. Rounds 5-7 will be power-matched. The Novice division is currently scheduled to clear to Octafinals on Sunday morning.
To maximize ordinal judge preferences, ach team entered has a 4 round prelim judging obligation. All judges are obligated for the first elimination round. Judges are further obligated to judge one round after the elimination of their last team. Schools whose judges or replacement judges do not meet their obligations can have their teams prevented from competing.
TOURNAMENT FEES
Fees for the tournament are $100.00 per team. A limited number of hired judges will be available at $140.00 per uncovered team. In other words, a full judge would cost $245.00 and cover two teams.
